Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few years, there are affiliate programs for just about any type of product you wish to promote. The goal is to find an affiliate program that makes money. Before even considering promoting a product as an affiliate, there are several things to take into consideration.

1) Keywords

Most Internet marketers fail because they have not done their homework before promoting a product for somebody else. In the Internet marketing world, keywords are the main ingredient to online success.

Research, research, research equals success. There are lots of great tools readily available to help you with keyword research, but if you skip this first step and go right into promoting a product, chances are there is too much competition or not enough people searching to buy what you have to offer.

2) Creating an offer

Now that you have done your keyword research homework like a good Internet Marketer, and now that you have narrowed done a product or niche to promote, the next very important step is to create an offer. There are several ways to promote on the internet, whether it be through pay-per-click advertising, driving traffic to your website, email marketing, classified ads online and offline, banner ads, and the list goes on.

3) Success

Fantastic! You are now officially an Internet marketer. You have a niche or product to promote, you have created a great offer, you know from your keyword research that there are lots of people searching for what you have to offer and you know that the competition is not too great that it is possible for you to have an affiliate program making money.

You are happy as you can possibly be, and you check your statistics daily to see how you are progressing and to see if you have made any sales yet. You make a few sales and you think, this is okay, but it's not great. It is not the huge success you were hoping for. You know you did everything right, you followed all the rules, you have everything in place, why is not your affiliate program making money?

4) Protecting your Links

No matter how good your offer is, no matter how much money you have spent in creating your website, or time spent on email marketing, if you are sending out raw affiliate links, the links that scream they are an affiliate link, you are losing money. First of all, nobody wants to click on a raw affiliate link that has a bunch of jumbled numbers and odd characters after them. Most people are afraid of scary looking links and won't click on them, no matter how good your copy is.

The other possibility is your affiliate commissions are being stolen before people even click on them. This happens when people recognize your link is an affiliate link, and so they cut off the garbled part of the link and paste the main URL into a new browser. There goes your commission.

Increase your affiliate commissions by cloaking your links before sending them out.
